The bigger the poker tournament these days the more unknowns show up at the final table. They show up due to two basic reasons. They have enjoyed a very lucky period of good hands that also happened with the aid of their skill. They also have in many cases learned how to play tournament poker online. They have hours of play and have learned through hard experience how to play in a tournament. This ability to suddenly show up at the final table just shows how capable these unknown casino players are, and getting good cards can make an unknown look very good. But good cards are only part of the answer. You need to know how to play them as well.
Many of these unknowns are young and got to the tournament by winning a satellite tournament. Many would have never played if they had to put up the $10,000 entry fee for the WSOP but by winning the satellite they got to play.
Most of them admit they got further into the tournament than they ever thought they would. They were initially happy to just get to play and then as the cards fell their way they began to advance until at the end they were seated at the final table and well financed for a long time to come. The final table players in the WSOP were already assured over one million dollars in prize money. This is one large payoff when you consider what they paid to get into the satellite game.
Some of these players are extremely good cash players in their home area and others are from casino towns. For some that qualify this way, this is the first live game they have ever played in, as their play has been limited to online. It is hard to believe that a player’s first live game is the WSOP. What a thrill and for many it may never be repeated as the entry fee is very steep. Some of these unknowns were accused of being one shot lucky, but that has not proven out as some of them have done quite well in other tournament and when they came back to Vegas. For the most part they have been proven to be class acts as well as winners. That is a great thing to find out in this day and age.
