Believe it or not, everything a poker player says or bets is not truthful. A streak of skepticism is a good trait and further proof of a good hand is needed to make the point. One bet does not prove anything. A follow-up bet or raise is hard to discount even if it is a bluff. Let’s say there are a pair of Kings in the flop in a Holdem game. A player comes out betting early. Do they have a third King or a par or just putting pressure on the other players? Unless they are willing to bet again or raise, they probably do not have the third King. Watch out for the other player who just called. Trips on the flop in Holdem are a trap hand.

The flop comes three suited cards in the Flop in a Holdem game. A player comes out betting, do they have the flush or just a high pair. This kind of hand is tricky and you would be wise to wait before raising back unless you actually have the flush. If you have the nut flush and the other player has a flush also, you have to be smiling from ear to ear. Some players holding the ace to the suited cards will bet and hope they get the fourth card to the suit in the Flop. This bet is a good come bet as others may fold and if you hit he hand you will have a lock.

Keeping the pressure on other players is a given for playing smart poker. It is harder to call a bet than make a bet. Players who push hands are playing from a position of strength. Pressure wins more hands than passive play. Betting out makes the other players worry that their hand may not be good enough. All of these factors are reasons to be the better and not the caller.

Some times it is wise just to raise a bet to see what happens. Raises do get more attention when made after a significant bet. This kind of raise is powerful and makes other players think you have a hand for sure. Keep getting in the face of other players when you have a hand. Sometimes this is all it takes to win the pot.
