Texas Holdem vs Omaha Poker
The difference between playing Omaha and Holdem is like night versus day. The one similarity is the highest poker hand wins the pot. The biggest difference is there are more high-value hands dealt in Omaha than there are in Texas Holdem. You will see more straights and flushes in Omaha. You will also see bigger hands than these in Omaha. Rarely will a big pair or two pair hold up in Omaha and these hands win all of the time in Holdem. Trips are a risky hand in Omaha as it is easily beat since each player has nine cards to make their hand.
The difference in the two games can be traced back to the fact that in Holdem each player makes their hand up from seven cards. In Omaha there are nine cards available to all players. This two-card difference allows bigger hands to show up more often.
A new player to Omaha that is used to playing Holdem will get slaughtered at first, as they will play the hands like they did in Holdem. A good small hand in Holdem has a huge chance of losing in Omaha. It takes a while to see this and learn it by losing money on second and third best hands. A flop in Omaha that has three suited cards is likely to end up with at least one flush being dealt. A flop with a pair will end up with trips or better in most hands. This is far from true in many Holdem hands. The fact that each Omaha player is holding four cards makes the difference.
Betting large bets on flushes and straights like they were the “holy city” early in the poker hand could easily bite you when the River card has been dealt. The lesson here is do not be too proud of this kind of hand until the board is completed. Full houses and better show up routinely in Omaha.
In Holdem large pairs and two pair hands are of real value. They can and should be played in a strong manner. In Omaha they will get you in trouble often. If you compare Omaha HiLow to Holdem there are other factors at play. The possibility of two winners makes for huge pots in Omaha HiLow, but it also means that you can put a lot of money in the pot and make very little profit on a split pot. At least in Holdem if you win the pot you will rake it all in.
