On a roulette layout there are three columns of numbers with 12 single numbers in each column. A roulette player can wager on a column and if any of the numbers come up the bet will win at a 2 to 1 payoff. Column bets are part of a group of wagers in the Outside bets. The payoff is a little light, as it does not take into consideration the zero or double zero, which increases the no-win numbers by two. If none of the column numbers have come up for a series of spins the aware player may begin to play this bet with a small progressive bet.
Since this bet covers 12 numbers out of 38 the chances of it hitting and even repeating increase as the spins add up without any of them being hit. For some reason in roulette when numbers fail to show for an extended period of time, when they do finally hit they have a tendency to repeat shortly after the first hit.
Some players use this strategy all of the time when they play roulette. There is no logical reason for it to happen this way, but in the real gambling world this is the way it comes down. Try it out on a play money roulette site for yourself and see if it works for you or not. Any betting strategy a player comes up with should be tested this way to get a feel for the loss potential and the win potential.
System testing has a long an expensive history in roulette. So far no one has ever come up with a betting plan that guaranteed a winning session. Some of the better wagering plans do lower the house percentage against the player, but not to the point that the player has the edge.
The Internet is full of roulette betting systems that promise all kinds of good results. All of them never can guarantee a session win. Some however are interesting ideas for interlocking bets that take advantage of parlays, progression betting and number repeating. The word of caution is do not be taken in by the claims.
Column betting is simple and direct and the payoff is okay for a roulette bet. There is no skill needed to sit and play this bet for a session. During the session do not be afraid to take a flyer on a hunch bet. It just may be an excellent play.
