Online Tournaments
I know there are many online tournaments out there, and I was wondering if anyone here competed in one before? I have thought about joining one, but since I am no expert, I thought it might be a waste of time. What do you think?

I don't think it would be a waste of time, even if you aren't an expert. Rather, I think it would give you some valuable experience, regardless of whether or not you win. So, I say go for it!

Texasholdem makes a good point. Even if you don't consider yourself to be an expert, competing in a tournament would provide you with valuable experience and make you a better player. If you have the opportunity to play in a tournament, take it!

I totally agree. What better way to gain experience than to actually play in a tournament. You can gain access through playing in free-rolls or by playing in satellites that offer small buy-ins. Being a novice doesn't count you out from winning in a holdem tournament, for example. Just bear in mind that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Joining a tournament will help you one way or another. If you win then you can proceed to the next round but if you lose then you learn from that experience and become a better player next time you join another tournament.

I haven't joined any tournaments either, I just play for fun and didn't think about taking gambling to the next step, so to say. I could try though, the experience will do me good.

I've played in many poker tournaments. The benefit of a poker tournament is that the total amount you are investing is known before you start to play. In contrast to a cash game, where you might lose your stack 10 times in a row, if you play a $2.20 tournament, you know in advance that you can only lose $2.20.
An exception to the above is rebuy & addon tournaments (R&A). In an R&A tournament, you can rebuy if you lose all your chips, and after an hour or two everyone can addon to their stack for a fee. I recommend that beginners stay away from R&A tournaments, at least until they gain some experience.

I compete in tournaments all the time. The more players, the more the jackpot. Then again, the higher the competition. Still, when I win, I like for it to be worth my while!
